17-Hydroxyventuricidin A is a macrolide antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces sp. with antifungal and antibacterial activity.
Details
17-Hydroxyventuricidin A is a macrolide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces sp. strain US80, isolated from Tunisian oasis soil. It was purified alongside irumamycin and X-14952B and structurally characterized using IR, ESI-MS, and 1H/13C NMR analyses. As a member of the venturicidin family, it is structurally related to venturicidin A, a known inhibitor of mitochondrial F0F1-ATP synthase. The compound exhibits antifungal and antibacterial activities, and its production is influenced by carbon source (glucose) and magnesium concentration. Production can be significantly enhanced (~70%) by addition of heat-killed fungi to the culture medium, suggesting elicitor-induced secondary metabolism. Due to its antifungal potency, it has potential applications in agricultural biocontrol strategies.
