It acts as a potentiator of NGF signaling rather than an NGF mimic, increasing neuronal differentiation responses in the presence of NGF. Structural studies revealed that it belongs to a macrocyclic polylactone class of fungal metabolites. NG-011 has been used as a neurobiology research tool to investigate NGF-dependent differentiation pathways and neuronal survival mechanisms.
